A LUXURY STAY CLOSE TO BARRA BEACHES
Barra is a few kilometers from Tofo and lies between the Inhambane estuary and the Indian Ocean.
Stunning mangrove estuary to the west linked to the Indian ocean to the East influence the Peninsula of Ponta da Barra.
A long beach that extends from the old light house to the Inhambane estuary mouth is an ideal place to watch the sunset. The beach itself (Praia da Barra) is made of soft, white sand, where most lodges are located. A large range of water sports and in-land activities are on offer for guests and walk-ins.
Diving is particularly good here and the same than in Tofo : Whale Sharks, Manta Rays and, from May to October, Humpback whales.
North of the Peninsula, on the opposite side of the estuary, is Linga-Linga (which once had an old whaling station)
ACTIVITIES IN BARRA
DIVING
They have a fully equipped dive centre with all the necessary facilities including kitting-up rooms, filling station, rest areas, kit storage, lecture and first-aid areas. Their resident diving instructors offer professional tuition. Open water and advanced are amongst the many courses on offer. Equipment may be hired at a nominal charge.
They have a number of reefs, some inshore and others further away. Dive depths vary from 8 meters to 30 meters offering a variety of diving experiences. Commonly seen are manta rays, whale sharks, turtles and a huge variety of reef fish and for the lucky a sighting of the rare dugong. This is also the migratory route of the Humpback Whale during calving season.
OCEAN SAFARIS
Organized for divers and non-divers wishing to experience all the creatures like Whale Sharks and Dolphins on the surface. These experiences last approx. 2 hours and are a must.
HORSE RIDING
A guided horse ride on the beach is a once in a lifetime experience. The romance of riding along the beach with the sea and sand and wind in your face is an unforgettable experience. Beginners are welcome.
QUAD BIKE EXCURSION
Quad biking through the coconut plantations opens new vistas and following the tracks and paths through these areas allows one to experience the real Mozambique while riding through local villages and into the heart of Mozambique. These are guided and managed by Barra staff.
Quad bikes and vehicles are prohibited from the beaches as we wish to preserve the rich and unspoilt marine life.
INHAMBANE SIGHTSEEING
Inhambane City is steeped in history. This was the southerly most trading port in Africa used by the Arabs. Vasco Da Gama landed here in 1534. The cathedrals, old colonial Portugese architecture, African culture and local markets make this a fascinating town to browse around. A number of restaurants in and around Inhambane offer a variety of meal options.
CATAMARAN YACHT
Our luxury 33foot liveaboard catamaran offers unforgettable day trips in our secluded estuary. Trips to Pansy Island are offered as well as snorkeling trips.
CHARTER BOAT FISHING
The experienced resident fishermen are on hand to introduce you to our excellent fishing waters. A large number of game fish abound in these waters including sailfish and pelagic species. This makes this area a prime destination for fishing competitions.
Our ski boats offer the latest equipment and tackle to give you the edge on catching the big one. We do encourage tag and release.
DHOW TRIP
Take a trip on a dhow and feel a great sense of history as the dhows are still built as they were in ancient times. This is something that must be experienced before this age old tradition dies out.
MANGROVE
Behind Barra Lodge is a saltwater mangrove with crystal clear waters which can be explored by boat or on foot. This ecosystem is made up of a fascinating chain of pioneering and sacrificial plants together with a huge array of crustaceans. Flocks of flamingo’s, local fish traps and stunning sunsets over the estuary make this a photographers dream.
ACCOMMODATIONS IN BARRA
BLUE FOOTPRINTS
Blue Footprints offers a private, tranquil, luxury scuba diving destination and accommodation. The lodge is a hidden beach oasis that offers understated elegance and unparalleled ocean view.
As a truly eco lodge, electricity for the lodge and the diving center is created solely by solar power and great attention is paid to the environment.
There are five villas, designed to maximize the spectacular views of the ocean. All rooms have hammocks, open plan en-suite bathrooms with frameless inside shower with an ocean view. All villas also have an outside shower on the open deck. Tea and coffee are provided in the rooms and are available in the lodge lounge throughout the day.
The restaurant is built overlooking the ocean with a laid back atmosphere, folding doors opening onto two decks in the front and onto the pool deck at the back. The menu selection is carefully planned to meet the needs of all the guests and to introduce them to the exotic flavors of the region.
Blue Footprints Dive Centre is small and exclusive and can organize diving activities and ocean safaris. Diving conditions and techniques do not vary from other diving centers in the area. Considering their position north of Tofo, different dive sites can be dived while still having access to the world famous dive spots close to Tofo.
FLAMINGO LODGE
Flamingo Bay Water Lodge is situated in the pristine tidal bay of Inhambane, on Barra Peninsula. The lodge is situated on stilts on the crystal clear waters of the warm Indian Ocean. This eco-paradise is home to flocks of flamingo’s, tropical fish and the very rare dugong. The sunsets at Flamingo Bay are nothing less than breathtaking.
The warm Indian Ocean offers safe bathing all year round and the endless wide open beaches offer hours of strolling pleasure.
This lodge is unique and the only one of its kind in Africa. Flamingo Bay prides itself in having an undisturbed eco-setting that is peaceful and pristine and we endeavor to keep it that way. Because of the setting and exclusivity, they do not allow children less than 12 years at the lodge allowing guests to appreciate the peacefulness, elegance and romance of this tropical getaway.
Their luxury water chalets are spacious and well appointed with balcony, wide opening sliding doors and air-conditioning.
The chalets and furniture are constructed from beautiful local hardwoods from Mozambique. Each chalet is situated on stilts in the crystal clear tidal waters of Inhambane Bay. Sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling and boating may be enjoyed directly from each chalet.
Set aside from the chalets and connected by wooden walkways is the main building which can also be accessed from the land and is fronted by the tidal waters of the bay. For those not wishing to walk, golf carts are available to ferry guests between the chalets and main building. An elegant restaurant overlooks the inviting swimming pool which merges into the view across the bay. Enjoy cocktails on the spacious pool deck while watching the sunset or enjoy a meal in the morning or evening either indoors or outdoors. The gourmet restaurant offers sumptuous meals specializing in local dishes of Mozambique including fresh prawns, fish, crabs and calamari which are all caught locally.
The well stocked bar is a gathering point attracting guests to share their days experiences in a convivial atmosphere. The bar overlooks the pool and offers spectacular sunsets. An upstairs area enhances the view as the day draws to a close. An ideal place to relax over a good cup of coffee and a light meal.
