| Here, the whale shark is not a legend
The clear water of the Indian ocean in front of Tofo is very rich in Nutrition and offers therefore ideal conditions for an impressive an amazing diversity of a resident and seasonal fauna. Apart of the whale-shark, Mantas can be watched dancing their ballet, Sea turtles are graceful cruising around and dolphins can be watched playing. Humpback whales can be seen and heard in the mating season, June till September.
The Sea-beds:
· The Whale
shark is the main attraction. We can notice their
presence all year round but mainly from October to May.
The best way to observe them is in snorkelling but it is
also frequent to see them during a dive. Their size can reach
14 meters.
· Manta
rays gather around the reefs where the numerous small
fishes clean their parasites. It is frequent to admire the
round dance of ten or so mantas flying around you. The spread
of the largest can reach 6 meters!
· The
sharks, Zambezi or bulls, ragged-tooth, hammers,
white and black tip, leopards, Guitars. Populations are drastically
decreasing in many places, but remain quite present around
Tofo.
· Dolphins
are present in larger groups between Mai and September in
times of the Sardine migration further down south. Usually
seen on boat rides to the dive sites, school of Humpback dolphins
are resident in the area and more often seen.
· Humpback
whales are around Tofo between June and October for
the migration season. The melody of their songs can be heard!!
· Turtles,
Green and Leatherback live year around in the oceans
and on the vast beaches of the Inhambane region. Dugongs,
almost extinguished specie, still lives in the Inhambane bay.
· Tuna,
Barracudas, King fish, trevallies, jacks crocodile fish, scorpion
fish Nudibranches, Spanish dancers, Eels, the famous harlequin
shrimp and many other more, to only name a view of the rich
sea bed members……

Mozambique for diving, boasting nearly 15 spectacular sites
located between 5 and 50 minutes by boat !!!
The
Diving :
There are 2 dive centres
in Tofo and Terra Profunda works with both together. Both
are PADI licensed and recognise CMAS divers. These clubs are
operated by South African and British owners and the organizations
are very serious about what they are doing.
PADI and NAUI formations.
Because there is no decompression chamber in Mozambique (closest
in Durban), both dive with respect to the instructions and
decompression tables. Equipment (Scubapro in general) is changed
every two years. Tanks are in aluminium or steel, 10 and 12
litres, 230 bars. Possibility of Nitrox- and Night dives.
8 m semi-rigid boats
driven by Yamaha 2x85 cv engines. 14 divers maximum per boat.
Oxygen and diving-security equipment in agreement with the
south African legislation. Departures from the beach. Diving
is practicable all year round. Tofo is the best location in
Mozambique for diving, boasting nearly 15 spectacular sites
located between 5 and 50 minutes by boat.
